Visiting bioinformatician speaks on Salmonella typhimurium genomics

Prof. Martin Nyaga is hosting Dr. Benjamin Kumwenda at the UFS-NGS Unit from 5 to 9 September 2022. Dr. Kumwenda (Associate researcher, Hinton lab, University of Liverpool, UK, and Director of Student Affairs at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), previously the College of Medicine, and Kamuzu College of Nursing. Dr. Kumwenda is a highly esteemed bioinformatician and the big-data consultant for the African Enteric Viruses Genome Initiative hosted by the UFS-NGS Unit and collaborating partners from Ghana, Malawi, and Kenya.

During his visit, he spoke on “Investigating emerging Salmonella Typhimurium Sequence Type 313 lineages among patients at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi”. He also spent time with the UFS-NGS unit’s postgraduate students to discuss their individual bioinformatics needs on their projects.

Dr. Benjamin Kumwenda also visited the UFS Directorate of Student Affairs for a courtesy benchmarking call to Mr. Themba Hlasho (the Executive Director), and Dr. WP Wahl (the Director of student life) and their delegation and also the UFS Directorate of International Affairs for a courtesy call to Dr. Cornelius Hagenmeier (the Senior Director) to discuss collaborative ventures between the UFS-NGS Unit and the KUHeS.
