On the 18 October 2022, four members of the UFS-NGS team (Ayodeji Ogunbayo, Robyn-Lee Potgieter, Milton Mogotsi and Hlengiwe Sondlane) attended the Oxford Nanopore Technologies training workshop in Cape Town. The University of the Western Cape (UWC) hosted the event that brought together all the DIPLOMICS partner labs. Sessions on Nanopore sequencing and analysis, as well as Nanopore technologies such as the MinION, which the Unit has recently acquired, were featured. It was a very insightful and informative day for the team. There were presentations from Tim Newman (Diplomics), Tulio de Oliveira (Stellenbosch University), and team from Oxford Nanopore Technologies among many others. Some of the topics included: Introduction to DIPLOMICS, Getting started- Nanopore sequencing, Nanopore data analysis, Tracking SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern in waste water: a South African perspective and updates on Nanopore technologies.
