A UFS-NGS Unit Affiliated Master’s Student Attend’s an Ameliorating Data Science Workshop in Durban

Ms. Somila Nazo, a Master’s student at the University of the Free State Next Generation Sequencing Unit (UFS-NGS Unit), reflects on her enriching experience at the Data Science Workshop on Bioinformatics and Viral Genomics, held in Durban from February 24th to 28th, 2025. The workshop delivered in-depth training in bioinformatics, with a strong focus on viral genomics, equipping her with critical skills to enhance the data analysis central to her Master’s research.

Reflecting on the experience, she noted, “The practical training in advanced genomic data handling and specialized software tools was immensely valuable. These skills are essential for driving my research forward.” She highlighted how this expertise will not only uphold her academic project but also contribute to the broader research goals of the UFS-NGS Unit.

Ms. Nazo also expressed deep appreciation for Prof. Martin Nyaga, head of the unit, whose steadfast support made her participation possible. “I am profoundly grateful to Prof. Nyaga for his encouragement and dedication to my growth as a researcher. His backing was key to seizing this opportunity,” she said.

Armed with these newly acquired skills, Ms. Nazo is poised to advance her work. “I’m excited to leverage this knowledge to make meaningful contributions to the unit’s projects and elevate my own research,” she concluded.
