The UFS-NGS Unit is excited to announce the well-deserved promotion of Prof. Martin Nyaga from Associate Professor to Full Professor in the School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Free State commencing 01 January 2025. This significant achievement recognizes not only years of dedication and hard work but also the substantial impact Prof. Nyaga has achieved in his research, postgraduate student mentorship through teaching and learning, scholarly engagement and leadership as the head of the UFS-NGS business Unit. Prof. Nyaga’s promotion to Full Professor represents the culmination of an inspiring academic journey. From the very beginning of his tenure as a Researcher/Lecturer in 2016 when he joined the University of the Free State, Prof. Nyaga demonstrated an unwavering commitment to academic excellence. Through groundbreaking research, mentorship and valuable service to the faculty, Prof. Nyaga has consistently set high standards of scholarly achievement.
As a leading researcher in genomic surveillance of viral pathogens, Prof. Nyaga is an NRF B-rated researcher who has made significant contributions to advancing knowledge and understanding of the genetic diversity of viral pathogens, particularly enteric and respiratory viruses. His work has been widely published in high impact journals, frequently cited by peers, and has influenced research both within and outside of his discipline. Prof Nyaga’s research not only deepens our understanding of viral infectious diseases, but also has practical applications that continue to impact the lives of people through contributions to vaccine efficacy studies and development efforts.
The recognition of Prof. Nyaga as a Full Professor underscores the high regard with which his peers hold his scholarly contributions at the international front. He has consistently demonstrated a commitment to advancing the field, from leading innovative research projects to mentoring students and emerging researchers. Prof. Nyaga has also demonstrated exceptional service to the academic community.
